FAQ

How does income tax work in Germany?

Germany uses a progressive tax system with rates from 14% to 45%. The first €12,348 of annual income (Grundfreibetrag) is tax-free. The rate increases progressively through multiple brackets up to 45% for income above €277,826.

What are the German tax classes (Steuerklassen)?

Germany has 6 tax classes: Class 1 (single), Class 2 (single parent), Class 3 (married, higher earner), Class 4 (married, equal earners), Class 5 (married, lower earner), and Class 6 (second job). The tax class affects how much income tax is withheld monthly.

What is the solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag)?

The solidarity surcharge is 5.5% of your income tax, but it only applies if your annual income tax exceeds €20,350. Most employees with typical salaries no longer pay it since the 2021 reform.

How much are social security contributions in Germany?

Employees pay roughly 20% of gross salary: pension insurance (9.3%), health insurance (~8.55% incl. additional contribution), unemployment insurance (1.3%), and care insurance (2.4% childless, or 1.8% with children). Contributions are capped at monthly ceilings.

How accurate is this calculator?

This calculator provides a close approximation based on the official 2026 tax formulas and social security rates. Actual payslip amounts may differ slightly due to individual factors such as your specific health insurer's supplementary rate, private insurance, tax allowances (Freibeträge), or other personal circumstances. For exact figures, consult your employer's payroll department or a tax advisor.
